Ralph Waldo Emerson Essay Example for Free
Ralph Waldo Emerson Essay Learning is a natural ability that is wired into many animals DNA; the way that humans should learn has been debated by the various educators because of the endless ways to teach. Teachers and parents take this matter seriously like Ralph Waldo Emerson in ââ¬Å"From Educationâ⬠and Todd Gitlin in ââ¬Å"The Liberal Arts in an Age of Info-Glutâ⬠who created essays on education; and Billy Collins in ââ¬Å"The History Teacherâ⬠entail for then and who wrote a poem concerned with the status of education. These people show what the importance of education is entailing what learning should and should not involve; a teacher should respect and have patience for children; a teacher should also let a child have creativity and lessons of the past. Many teens do not respect their teacher which might be because the teacher does not respect them; as the golden rule goes, ââ¬Å"treat others the way you would treat yourselfâ⬠; Ralph Waldo Emerson in ââ¬Å"From Educationâ⬠would probably agree with this quote because he strongly believes that, ââ¬Å"the secret of [e]ducation lies in respecting the pupil,â⬠(page 102). Shows that Emerson understood what children are thinking then did something to help them by simply respecting them. Another big issue with education is patience; some people do not have enough patience to guide children to what they are supposed to learn. Emerson also believes that patience is an important part in education, ââ¬Å"to regard the young [children, they require] no doubt, rare patience: a patience that nothing but faith in medial forces of the soul can give,â⬠Emerson was trying to say that someone has to really care in order to teach information to children (page 105). Some people do not see the point in having art classes or history classes; the reason why is because art assists students to express themselves in a way that words cannot along with helping them find out what kind of person they truly are; and history is needed to teach children where they originated from; and to show them mistakes that other people in the past made so they will not make them again. Todd Gitlin in ââ¬Å"The Liberal Arts in an Age of Info-Glutâ⬠agrees with this ââ¬Å"[students] need some orientation to philosophy, history, language, literature, music, and arts that have lasted more than 15 minutes,â⬠(page 156) because students need the outlet to express themselves; or if they do not they would not learn morals then they would become exactly what people were trying to stop; as shown in ââ¬Å"The History Teacherâ⬠by Billy Collins who stated, ââ¬Å"the children would leave his classroom for the playground to torment the weak and the smart,â⬠all because ââ¬Å"[the teacher tries] to protect his studentsââ¬â¢ innocence he told them the Ice Age was really just the Chilly Age, a period of a million years when everyone had to wear sweaters. And the Stone Age became the Gravel Age, named after the long driveways of time,â⬠this demonstrates how not teaching children lessons of the past which are the brood violenceââ¬â¢ that others committed in history; by not teaching this history it affects childrenââ¬â¢s behavior in real life (page 143). Morals are right and wrong many peopleââ¬â¢s morals will differ; this is why teaching them is tricky because the teacherââ¬â¢s morals might not be the same as the parentââ¬â¢s morals. This is why some of the history in textbooks is sometimes just the summary of what really happened but not enough for the main point to be set across unlike in ââ¬Å"The History Teacherâ⬠where, ââ¬Å"the Spanish Inquisition [is] nothing more than an outbreak of questions such as ââ¬Å"How far is it from here to Madrid? â⬠,â⬠and ââ¬Å"the War of the Roses took place in a garden, and the Enola Gay dropped one tiny atom on Japan,â⬠explains when a teacher goes too far in trying to protect studentââ¬â¢s mind from bad; when only good is taught and everything else is censored then the students become the opposite; because they do not know the consequences of doing bad, which is why history is taught. As teachers and parents they have to let their students make their own choices as shown in ââ¬Å"From Educationâ⬠Emerson says, ââ¬Å"it is not for you to choose what he shall know, [or] what he shall do,â⬠shows that sometimes a student needs to find out the consequences the hard way, and let them choose what they want to learn (page 143). Education is needed in modern day society to help students and children grow and help the nation; by giving students proper education the teacher are not really helping the students but they are helping themselves. Teaching creativity helps a student express themselves; respect should be given so the student can give it back; patience is needed to help them understand; morals need to be taught through history so the student will make fewer mistakes; these are essential to a good education and an even better future: as shown by the writings of Billy Collins, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Todd Gitlin.

Introduction Of Literature Review Nursing Essay
Introduction Of Literature Review Nursing Essay Literature review is a body of text that determines the aim to review the critical point of current knowledge including substantive findings as well as theoretical and methodological contribution to a particular topic (Wikipedia). Another definition of literature review is a literature reviews is a critical search for an analytical framework, or framework which you can put to work to test the hypothesis or to systematically investigate a set of issue (Jancovicz 2000, page 178). Literature review is a secondary source that combined with number of articles which have similar objective to form up a literature review. The numbers of articles were multitudinous cross-cultural journals, books, conferences and electronic sources of information. Therefore, literature review do not report any new experimental work, it is the review of an abstract accomplishment. Literature review able to help readers to understand the historical findings from other authors, its objective, it gives readers a draft to understand what was going on from the historical to now as well as telling the reader regarding the strengths and weaknesses of studies within the body. The following are the reasons to write a literature review: Distinguishing what has been done from what needs to be done Discovering important variables relevant to the topic Synthesizing and gaining a new perspective Identifying relationships between ideas and practice Establishing the context of the topic and problem Rationalize the significance problem Enhancing and acquiring the subject vocabulary Understanding the structure of the subject Relating ideas and theory to applications Identifying of the main methodologies and research techniques that have been used Placing the research in a historical context to show familiarity with state-of-the-art development Michael J Baker Writing literature review is important because it can avoid making same mistakes as other people did. As when reading the articles, sometimes may find out the errors or the some outdated information, thus, writer able to filter the information gained and amend it in his or her own articles. Furthermore, writing literature review can help to increase your breadth of knowledge in your subject area. When being allocated to do a research, writer has to understand the objective of the research first before start any findings or surveys. Writer need to read numbers of articles to comprehend the subject area in order to figure out what has been done by prior authors and what have to jot down in current research. After read the multi cross-cultural journals or books, writer has gained the knowledge in the particular area. From reading articles written by other authors, reader can improve his or her skills in linking his or her own ideas to the theories to applications and identify what resea rch methodology to be used in the current research either questionnaire, interviews, case studies, observational trial, experiment and so on. In doing a researchs literature review, writer has to going outside to contact experts in the particular field to gain other knowledge, information, ideas before he or she start to write anything. The Importance of Literature Review There are few types of literature review which are narrative, systematic and meta-analytic reviews. Narrative literature review in overall is the standard review of the literature, critically appraise and summarize the literature relevant to an identified topic (Hemingway Brereton 2009). This type of literature review is integral the points from the number of articles and presented as background reading immediately. This kind of literature review tend to begin its selected topic with explanation of the rationale and by providing some theoretical or historical framework for the research paper and the reasons to examining studies relevant to the topic (Baun McMurray-Schwarz 2007). Another type of literature review is systematic literature review sometimes referred as best-evidence synthesis or practice based research synthesis (Dunst 2009). This type of literature review is a thorough, comprehensive, transparent and unbiased review of the literature undertaken according to a clearly defined and systematic approach (Aveyard 2010; Neely et al., 2010). Systematic literature reviews are lengthy processes that involve a focused cross-disciplinary search strategy with clearly stated criteria for inclusion and exclusion of the literature (Berkeljon Baldwin, 2009). Moreover, there is one more type of literature review which is meta-analytic review. Meta-analytic review sometimes known as quantitative systematic review, provide a statistical review approach to measure the effect size and the aggregate studies relevant to the research question (Sun, Pang Wang 2010; Vetter, 2003). According to Humphrey (2011) stated that meta analysis should also provide readers with perspective so that findings are interpreted in a meaningful ways. Other than that, Neely et al (2010) said that Every meta-analysis is based on underlying systematic review, but not every systematic review lead to meta-analysis. A research project is the make for informing or telling people with new knowledge or discovery. Literature review is important because it is a part of paper where researcher will be given an opportunity to strengthen the research paper by putting citation what other reliable authors had said about your topic. To putting citation in the research paper is for the purpose of to proving that writer is not just writing about any random subject but that many others have also poured their thoughts on the topic (Admin 2009). If without literature review which is no other reliable authors talking about the topic, it is only containing writers opinions about the fact that writer has discovered through his or her research. If the research project is just only contain with writers opinion, then how to further convince the readers? In this case, who will scrutinize writers research paper as he or she does not put any reliable evidence from previous authors who doing the same research in the parti cular field? Therefore, this is the need that is answered only by the literature review (Admin 2009). Simply by the fact that writer is using referencing by citing what more credible people had say about the topic will build a stronger foundation for your paper (Admin 2009). According to the University of Western Sydney (2010), states that literature review is important to build knowledge and to identify the methodology of research and seminal that work in the particular field that writer involve to. Moreover, literature review help writer to focus and refine the research question by convey the knowledge gap (University of Western Sydney, 2010). Literature review is to discover the problem of study however the problem of study can be solved by collection of data. It is important to know that what the researcher doing and how he or she worked from reading their research papers and the current researcher should not to duplicate the works done by previous researcher. Furthermore, by writing literature review, it able to help researchers to improve their research design and instrumentation, which not successful at last time (Cottrell McKenzie 2011). According to Leary (2004), states that a well created literature review establishes creditability of the researcher of the study, so he can get the entire benefit of his work. Literature review is important because it is to judge the research question and to deliver latest research material for readers. Procedures of Writing a Literature Review The procedures of writing a literature review include: Define the topic or research question Identify the relevant information: Inclusion or exclusion criteria and keywords Conduct the literature research Screen all and exclude the irrelevant studies Scrutinize the relevant studies Extract data and develop graphic organizers Synthesize the findings Develop conclusion and recommendations Rhoades Define the Topic or Research Question This is the initial step of start writing a literature review. During this step, it involves defining the specific topic and clear statement or review objectives or research question (Neely et al., 2010). The topic should be the researcher know enough about to determine whether it is viable researchable topic (University of South Australia). Successful applications usually outline a well-defined research problem or area of focus linked to a body of literature that discusses some of the issues relevant to the proposed topic (University of South Australia). According to Aveyard (2010), stated that a good research question acts as a guide, clearly providing focus structure for the literature review process. Identify the Relevant Information: Inclusion or Exclusion Criteria and Keywords After determine which topic to be organized, the next procedure is to identify the relevant information. By identifying the relevant information, researcher has to discuss a series of inclusion and exclusion criteria because the criteria have to fit with their review question and or the brief given by whoever is funding the project (Information and Computer Sciences). During doing the research and collecting the relevant information, researcher has to be cautious of any bias, be subjective, because researcher might introduce his or her bias into the review by adding certain inclusion or exclusion criteria. For example limiting to studies in English may miss important studies published in other languages (Information and Computer Sciences). Other than that, all decisions taken to include or exclude certain studies or groups of studies should be documented in the methods this way it can be seen that a systematic process has been followed(Information and Computer Sciences). If the researcher is doing dissertation research, the researcher has to show that the reason why chosen the particular topic to focus, and why the researcher has to excluded others. During this stage, the decisions from researcher are normally made by using the titles and abstract of the articles. Those that clearly irrelevant information is filter or exclude in this stage and those criteria which met are included in the review. Conduct the literature research The next step is to conduct the literature search by the identified keywords. Lucas Cutspec (2005) said that the search process involve a combination of many search tactics that include hand searching key journals and books, accessing the many electronic literature databases, investigating reference lists, and scanning the internet via multiple search engines, the latter likely to also include grey literature. Usually during searching process, there are included cross-disciplinary in that studies from various field of specialization. For example, there are numbers of journals within the broad disciplines, such as education, health, medicine as well as family-based and children- based psychology that may relevant to some topic that involving with children hearing loss (Rhoades, 2005). Literature search need to be careful as use of many search engines, electronic database and websites that are necessity for. Screen all and exclude the irrelevant studies When all the journals, articles and papers are accumulated and abstracts are read, then need to classify the potential information that relevant to the research question (Hemingway Brereton 2009). After that screened all the irrelevant studies and exclude it, then screen again the relevant information to ensure the consistent relevant to the research question and all identified variables (Rhoades, 2005). Scrutinize the relevant studies During this step, researcher has to scrutinize the relevant study. Another two independent reviewers have to be ensure that the consistency of the inclusion with the research question and protocol. Extract data and develop graphic organizers Findings from the studies of particular field are extracted from data extraction form which is tabulated data. Visual clarifiers can be acquired and formed from the tabulated data to facilitate knowledge of the similarities and differences between the relevant studies (Rhoades, 2005). There are number of variables extracted from the studies and the graphic organizer has to summarize the importance of the variables and the relationship of the variables with the studies. Rhoades (2005) stated that when data extracted for analysis and synthesis, the different studies may vary considerably. This is about when at this point, the determination is to make as to see the meta-analysis is appropriate or not. During this step, if the reviewers feel that the studies do not provide sufficient evidence, then, it is important to present the findings because lack of evidence to prove that their findings are reliable and it lead difficulty in publishing (Alderson Roberts, 2000). Synthesize the Findings With two independent reviewers, finding from each study are aggregated to produce bottom line on the clinical effectiveness, feasibility, appropriateness, and meaningfulness, of the intervention (Hemingway Brereton, 2009). Thus, the pool of findings is name as evidence synthesis (Rhoades, 2005). If the studies involve quantitative data or include not much of quantitative, meta-synthesis is provided in literature review (Rhoades, 2005). Conversely, if the studies involve sufficient evidence and quantitative data, the meta-analysis is conducted (Hemingway Brereton, 2009). Develop Conclusions and Recommendations This is the last step of the procedures in writing a literature review. During this stage, researcher has to include some introduction regarding the studies, roughly review the overall structure of and the contents from the studies and then drawn conclusion from the findings of both secondary and primary research. The conclusion should state the crucial annotation and cover the strengths and weaknesses of the studies in the particular research. After drawn conclusion, provide some potential impact of the research conducted such as its contribution of knowledge or understanding, its contribution to theory development, its contribution to practice and applicant, and its implication for future research (Baker Foy). Thereafter, indicate some potential recommendation arise from the previous sections in term of the implication of findings (Baker Foy). Other than that, due to all studies have its own strong point and its shortcomings, thus, researcher can state some of the problematic iss ues arise when conducting the findings and what improvement should be done. Therefore, it is significant that researcher develop awareness of the problematic issues noted in the review (Rhoades, 2005). Summary Literature review is a must to put in a research paper when researcher wish to write a research articles because it is essential to know what has been done by previous researchers in that particular studies and figure out what should be do in the current study to correct the mistake and error done by previous researchers. Thus, it is significant to read number of articles, journals, books from many elsewhere to gain knowledge from the particular studies in order to have a draft in mind what should be do. Furthermore, there are number of procedures to follow in order to write a good literature review because it may be read by others people to judge when the paper being published. Therefore, it is crucial to write a precise literature review to avoid mistakes or errors and get teasing by others.
Graphite Electrodes Production and Optimization Practices
Graphite Electrodes Production and Optimization Practices Graphite electrodes are used in both DC and AC electric arc furnaces. Companies who use electric arc furnaces have to cover the cost of these consumable electrodes during production, so optimizing the usage of graphite electrodes is a money-saving opportunity. This paper aims to discuss the production process of graphite electrodes as well as industry practices that are used to enhance the life of electrodes. To produce a graphite electrode, carbon is required. The carbon source for graphite electrodes comes from the petroleum industry as a by-product from the oil refining process. In the refining of crude oil, hydrocarbon chains are cracked in coking units and the resulting fuels are then separated as kerosene, gasoline, and diesel. As chains of hydrocarbons are being cracked in this process, pure carbon becomes deposited on the sidewalls of the coking units. The carbon on the sidewalls accumulates up to a certain point when it is the ground out of the unit. This carbon is called petroleum coke, or petcoke. This is the carbon source for graphite electrodes. After the petcoke is obtained from the oil refinery, it is blended with pitch to make a plastic-like material. (Making a UCARà ® Graphite Electrode) This blend of petcoke and pitch is then extruded through a circular die and cut off in sections. It is then baked at a temperature of above 800 degrees Celsius for a period of one to two weeks. After baking, the electrode is impregnated with more pitch to increase the density of the electrode which lowers electrical resistance and makes it stronger. The electrode is then re-baked at a slightly lower temperature to drive off volatiles found in the pitch. Finally, the electrode is heated to a temperature of about 3000 degrees Celsius to recrystallize the carbon into graphite. This final heating is called graphitization. Graphitization is very important in electrode manufacturing because it provides better mechanical strength and also improves electrical conductivity. The final step in electrode production is machining. The electrodes are machined to specific tolerances. This is especially important at the ends of the electrodes where the joints connect. (D. Klein) A good connection between joints is necessary for mechanical and electrical properties of the electrode. Electrode consumption takes on two forms: Continuous consumption and discontinuous consumption. (Richard J. Fruehan) Continuous consumption contributes 90% of total electrode consumption while discontinuous consumption only accounts for 10%. Even though discontinuous consumption accounts for far less than continuous consumption, discontinuous consumption can also account for furnace downtime which can cost a lot of money. So even though it is a small percentage, it is worthwhile to try to prevent it for the sake of productivity. In continuous consumption, the tip and sidewalls oxidize and the mass of the electrode is reduced. Tip consumption is a function of current and angle. Higher currents and steeper tip angles both yield faster oxidation rates of electrodes. (A. Lefort) Higher currents increase the temperature of the electrode which favors a faster oxidation rate. The steeper the tip angle, the closer the electrode needs to be to the steel bath to arc. Steel is more likely to splash onto the electrode if it is closer to the bath. One way to reduce the oxidation rate of electrodes is to cool them. Water cooled electrodes have been shown to reduce the oxidation rate of the sidewalls by 40% and the tip by 50%. One issue with water cooled electrodes is the flow rate of the water. If the flow rate is too high, water will pour into the furnace and increase the heat loss. The loss of heat can end up costing more than the money saved from reducing electrode consumption, so this is an important factor to conside r in this process. In discontinuous consumption, one of the most obvious techniques to prevent electrode breakage is simply to not ram the electrodes into the steel scrap. Graphite is a soft, brittle material and steel scrap is pretty hard and durable. If these two materials come head-to-head, the steel wins. Another method of discontinuous consumption is tip spalling. (A. Lefrank) This is more prevalent in DC furnaces than in AC furnaces because the DC electrodes see higher temperatures and therefore higher thermal stresses. The temperature gradient can be significant in the tip of a DC electrode and the thermal expansion of graphite can cause enough stress on the tip to break off small pieces. (J. E. Surma) Normally, the arc in a DC furnace will move about randomly, but occasionally the arc will sit in one spot, heating up that portion of the electrode tip creating thermal stresses that cause the tip to spall. Arc deflection control is a practice that has been implemented so when the arc becomes fixa ted on one spot, it will essentially ââ¬Å"pushâ⬠the arc out from that spot to get it to move about in a random fashion once more. Another practice to prevent the discontinuous consumption of electrodes is to ensure proper torque is applied when installing new electrode segments. The vibrations from the furnace and electromagnetic forces due to the flow of electricity give electrodes a good shaking. This can jostle the segments loose from their joints. This is mainly a problem in DC furnaces because AC furnaces are designed to ensure that the electromagnetic forces work to their advantage. In AC furnaces, the phase sequence is counterclockwise, so the forces on the electrodes due to the electromagnetism of the system only ever tightens the electrode joints. Below is a chart of recommended torque according to electrode diameter from SGL Carbons website and an AC furnace schematic of forces due to phase sequence. One final practice that helps prevent the failure of electrode joints is to turn off the water spray for a few minutes after the addition of another electrode segment. (Richard J. Fruehan) The temperature gradient is much steeper when the water spray operation is active. This thermal gradient can cause a problem when it reaches the joint because of the thermal expansion of graphite. Even if the electrode was tightened with the proper amount of torque, the effects of temperature on the electrode joint is enough to loosen it. This coupled with the furnace vibrations could be enough to cause the electrode joint to fail. In conclusion, graphite electrodes are an essential part of electric arc furnace steelmaking. Since they are consumable, any way to improve the life and efficiency of an electrode saves money in the steelmaking industry. Practices such as water cooling electrodes and optimizing current and tip angle are effective ways of reducing the oxidation of electrodes while taking care not to impact the scrap during melting, ensuring proper torque during installation, and turning off the water spray while adding another segment all help reduce breakage and joint failure. Income Distribution and Economic Growth in LDCs Essay -- essays paper
Income Distribution and Economic Growth in LDC's INTRODUCTION In recent years, one of the major concerns of economic development is the study of poverty, the income distribution and growth in the less developed countries (LDCââ¬â¢s) or Third World countries. Economists from all over the world have been doing researches and studies on how to induce a growth in those underdeveloped countries. However, countries differentiate in historical backgrounds, cultural believes and natural resources. As a result, the government would implement different strategies to attain a much fairer distribution of income among the society. The relationship between the income distribution and growth in the LDCââ¬â¢s is a significant factor that would affect government policies. Also, the study of the strategies, promoted from the government, would show us how the government can enable economic growth with a more equal income distribution. INCOME DISTRIBUTION AND ECONOMIC GROWTH For years, most of the more developed countries have been helping the less developed countries. Most of them believed that the only solution to the problem of poverty is to make the GDP grow. However, some other questions may arise as to who would make it grow, and should they be the few or the many. If it is the many who need to make it grow, then the GDP may be shared more equally. On the other hand, in order to make the GDP rise, we need to make decisions in production. The Production Possibility curve can show us the maximum amounts an economy can produce, but it doesnââ¬â¢t tell us which decision would be made. A country makes the decision on what to produce is accordance to the income distribution. The most ideal case is to have perfect income equality (Gini Coefficient equal to 0) in one society. However, studies tell us that this can never be reached. In most of the more developed countries, a Gini Coefficient (G.C.) of 0.2 to 0.35 is considered to be in relative equa lity. One may wonder what is the G.C. in the less developed countries? The answer is assumed to be a number in the higher rank. In fact, in most LCDââ¬â¢s, the G.C. is about 0.5 to 0.7 or even higher. This shows us that the problem of income inequality is very seriously in those countries. ââ¬Å"We were taught to take care of our GNP as this will take care of poverty. Let us reverse this and take care of poverty as this will take care of po... ...ad to many positive notes such as increase in productions, employments, and indirectly increase the local investments. Increase in productions, employments and capitals in the country thus enable a growth in the economy and therefore, the government should make careful decisions keeping in mind that of the impact these factors have on the societies. The Contrasts between Hayden and Stevens Essay -- Poetry Analysis
Both Robert Haydenââ¬â¢s poem ââ¬Å"Those Winter Sundaysâ⬠and Wallace Stevensââ¬â¢ poem ââ¬Å"The Plain Sense of Thingsâ⬠describe different aspects of what defines house and home. Although a home can be a house, a house does not always mean a home. This difference, among other factors, correlates with how both poets play on the emotional undertones between a house full of people and a lone house in the woods. While Hayden seeks to describe how oneââ¬â¢s house is a home because of a fatherââ¬â¢s love-filled action, Stevens delineates a houseââ¬â¢s transformation from a home for people to a home for the natural world. Although the poets use two different tones for their respective poems, both define what a home could stand for. ââ¬Å"Those Winter Sundaysâ⬠depicts the speakerââ¬â¢s childhood memory of Sunday church mornings. The speaker explains that his father, despite having to work outside the rest of the week to provide for his family, would go outside early mornings to retrieve firewood to heat the home. Only when the heat from the fire would warm the whole house and he polished his sonââ¬â¢s church shoes, would the speakerââ¬â¢s father wake the family from their slumber. No one showed their appreciation for this action that displayed the fatherââ¬â¢s love for his family. The speaker shows deep self-reproach from his indifference toward his father, which he concludes was from being young and naà ¯ve. In line 5 (ââ¬Å"No one ever thanked himâ⬠) and in line 10 (ââ¬Å"Speaking indifferently to himâ⬠) the speaker explicitly states that during those times he did not particularly care whether or not his father took the time to warm the house, polish his good shoes and then wake him up for church. At the time the speaker may have been fearful of his parents fighting, confrontation or yelling tha... ...s and downs. Both ââ¬Å"These Winter Sundaysâ⬠and ââ¬Å"The Plain Sense of Thingsâ⬠set out to describe what the speaker feels a home is, whether itââ¬â¢s where oneââ¬â¢s family is or where life resides in. Either poem takes intricate detail using the seasons to help reflect the underlying emotions of the poemââ¬â¢s voice along with standout lines that help the reader know what the speaker aims to say, why they say it and how they choose to say it. Hayden and Stevens do a nice job of conveying a certain sense without having to be boldly explicit. Works Cited Hayden, Robert. ââ¬Å"These Winter Sundaysâ⬠. India- a Growing Country
India- A growing country India is growing forward day by day. New methods of science and technology have been introduced since yearsâ⬠¦. Many of the new techniques have been introduced in the field of agricultureâ⬠¦ so India has been growing economically forwardâ⬠¦ great majority of people use science in their day to day life for many purposesâ⬠¦ Overall in my point of view the science and technology is improvingâ⬠¦ Science is the human endeavor to discover truths about the world around us. Scientists seek out answers through observation and experimentation. As we discover more and more, we are able to apply what we've learned to develop new technologies and to improve everyday life. But perhaps more importantly, as we gain knowledge through science, we are able to begin satisfying our deep-felt need to know more about ourselves. The word ââ¬Å"scienceâ⬠comes through the Old French, and is derived in turn from the Latin scientia, ââ¬Å"knowledgeâ⬠, the nominal form of the verb scire, ââ¬Å"to knowâ⬠. The Proto-Indo-European (PIE) root that yields scire is *skei-, meaning to ââ¬Å"cut, separate, or discernâ⬠. Similarly, the Greek word for science is ââ¬Ë ââ¬Ë, deriving from the verb ââ¬Ë , ââ¬Ëto know'. From the Middle Ages to the Enlightenment, science or scientia meant any systematic recorded knowledge. Science therefore had the same sort of very broad meaning that philosophy had at that time. In other languages, including French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian, the word corresponding to science also carries this meaning. Learning Programs in the American Express Learning Network
Background American Express is very large, world-wide company, which originally started as freight forwarding and delivery services. Now with the main focus being on financial services they want to train their employees with the knowledge to be efficient, knowledgeable, with good listening and speaking skills. Jeanette Harrison, a vice president at American Express, feels that compliance and control should be very important for customer care. Today American Express is the largest card issuer by purchase volume. Issued AddressedAmerican Express developed American Express Learning Network (AELN), whose main purpose is to address the performance capabilities of their employees. With a mission statement of ââ¬Å"ready all those who serveâ⬠the company AmExââ¬â¢s main goal is to teach with their employees effective jobs skills with the best possible learning method. There were three learning techniques the company tried. The first being a completely online based, the second being classroom, & the third a ââ¬Å"blendedâ⬠technique which was a combination of the first two.Janetteââ¬â¢s personal learning theory and goal-setting theory is ââ¬Å"learning literally changes livesâ⬠. She feels that education is the key to success and that if would help not only in work place but at home and in the community. Analysis of Issues Everyone has there on learning styles. So, it is no surprise that technique number three, ââ¬Å"blendedâ⬠learning, worked the best overall. It gave the most diverse style of learning. There was not one main style. The classroom style was incorporated with the encouragement of question asking and brainstorming and also online tools were also used to help teach as well. With all the different types of learning utilized the employees will get to see the information in many different ways and would most likely have a higher attention rate. The three styles were evaluated at six different levels to see which was most effective . The first level testing reaction from the learner, the second was the retention of the knowledge, the third was the behavior towards improved learning skills, the fourth was how it impacted the company, the fifth was the cost effectiveness of the learning style, and the sixth the application of the information into the actual job. Conclusions The ââ¬Å"blended learningâ⬠I feel is the best method. And it holds strong to Jeanettes learning and goal-setting theories. When the results came in on the three techniques the third scored or rated the best hands down. The company feels it has the upper hand in the leadership development program. The blue box values set by the company are a true testament to what the company wanted to achieve with the AELN program: customer commitment, quality, integrity, teamwork, respect for people, good citizenship, a will to win, and personal accountability. The three operating principals also hold strong to the values Jeanette believes in and wante d to achieve with the American Express Learning Network program. One the principals being to offer superior propositions to all of their customers, another being to operate with best in class economics, and last to be support American Express brand.
